Center for Ethics Presents Talk with Dr. Mario Livio

Dr. Mario Livio, senior astrophysicist at the Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute and the Head of the Institute’s Office of Public Outreach, will present his talk, Is God a Mathematician? on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Room of Seegers Union.

Livio,  , is a writer who covers material about mathematics, astrophysics and the existential affects on math and the physical sciences. He is well-known internationallyfor his material on astrophysics and as a prominent lecturer. His book Is God a Mathematician? offers an active and original discussion of topics from cosmology to the cognitive sciences from mathematics to religion. It focuses on the scientific and practical applications of great minds..

Over the past 10 years, Livio has worked with areas on supernova explosions and how they are used in cosmology. Before his work with astrophysics, Livio worked as a professor of physics in the physics department at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology from 1981 until 1991.

Livio won the Peano and International Pythagoras prizes for mathematics writing. He has been featured on NPR’s Speaking of Faith and Science Friday, and CBS’s 60 Minutes.

This talk is part of a year-long series of events, Science and Sensibility: Studying Nature as a Human Endeavor, directed by Dr. Bruce Wightman, Professor of Biology.
