The Martin Art Gallery is pleased to feature the dynamic photography of New York artist Bill Hayward, October 16 – November 9. This exhibition is in collaboration with the InVision Photo Festival and Lehigh Valley Photography Month.
To say Hayward is enthusiastic about the creative process is an understatement. Neither does he settle for skimming the surface to shoot another predictable portrait. With a simple question to his subjects— “Given enough paint, paper and permission, what would you do?”—he mines the depths of their passions and personalities. Each answer presents the viewer with an evocative and compelling mix of deeply personal communication and portraiture.
Guest curator Geoff Gehman has selected thirty prints that cover a lot of ground and provide moving insights into the complexity of the human spirit. From professional dancers, actors, writers, and musicians to young students, seasoned civil rights activists, and American Indian tribal leaders, their interactions with Hayward have allowed that complexity to become accessible for sharing, discussion, and admiration.
More of Bill Hayward’s “portraits of the collaborative-self’—a style that he invented—can be found in his book badBehavior (Rizzoli, 2000). Chasing Dragons, a retrospective of his work in photography, film, dance and painting is forthcoming in 2014 from Glitterati, Inc. Also scheduled for release next year is his film, asphalt, muscle & bone, about risk and the impossibility of love. Geoff Gehman is a former arts writer for The Morning Call, in Allentown where he covered many exhibits at Muhlenberg College and first profiled Bill Hayward, a fellow graduate of Lafayette College. He is the author of three books, including the memoir The Kingdom of the Kid: Growing Up in the Long-lost Hamptons (SUNY Press, 2013).
A reception to meet the artist will be held Wednesday, October 23, 4:30 – 6:00 PM in the Gallery. Hayward will be working as an artist-in-residence in the Galleria Lobby of the Baker Center for the Arts, Tuesday Oct. 22 and Thursday, Oct. 24, 11:30 – 2:30. Muhlenberg students, faculty and staff, and the public are encouraged to participate.
The exhibition, reception, and residency activities are free and open to the public. Gallery hours: Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon – 8:00 p.m., additional hours by appointment.
