Economics and Finance Mission Statement
The mission of the Economics and Finance Programs at Muhlenberg College is to provide a rigorous course of study in the methods and perspectives of economics and finance for the purpose of developing independent and critical thinkers, equipped with ethical values who are able to express ideas with clarity and grace. We integrate the very best traditions of the liberal arts with pre-professional studies, nurturing the intellectual agility necessary for success in a dynamic world. Economics Program Learning Goals
Students in the economics program will develop the ability to:
- Understand how market prices emerge from the decisions of individuals and institutions.
- Explain why markets sometimes attain and sometimes fail to attain an efficient allocation of resources.
- Understand how opportunity cost guides decision making.
- Understand how specialization and exchange can improve economic well-being.
- Understand the structure and performance of national economies and the government policies that influence that performance.
- Understand the tradeoff between efficiency and equality.
- Use empirical evidence and statistical techniques to evaluate an economic argument.
- Critically evaluate economic policies from various perspectives.
- Communicate effectively about economic concepts and issues.
