Message to the Community on Roe v. Wade Decision

A Message from President Harring to the Muhlenberg Community

To the Muhlenberg Community:

On Friday, the United States Supreme Court reversed almost 50 years of court precedent and overturned Roe v. Wade. This decision ends the constitutional right to an abortion for women and non-binary and transgender individuals, affecting their ability to make their own decisions about their reproductive health. This ruling will compromise access to health care, education and professional opportunities. We recognize the weight of the Supreme Court decision and the impact it has for current and future members of our educational community, particularly individuals of color and those with financial hardship.

Currently the right to an abortion continues to exist in Pennsylvania. While at Muhlenberg, our students will have access to the same healthcare as was available prior to this decision. When students return to campus, the Health & Counseling Center staff will be available to answer any questions regarding their care. We will continue to support the health of our students through on-campus resources including the Health Center, Counseling Center and the Offices of Equity & Title IX, Prevention Education and Multicultural Life. Moreover, we are fortunate to have student-run organizations and affinity groups that offer support, education and advocacy for these critical issues and who are already using their platforms to share information and resources. We value our deep partnerships with local community agencies that provide health and reproductive care for members of our campus community. More information about these resources and the direct support they can provide will be available in the coming weeks from the Dean of Students' Office.

Our College’s mission is grounded in values of equity, justice and active citizenship. We live out that mission by engaging in the political process at every level of government and by voting to make our voices heard.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Harring
President
