Known issue for iOS devices and private networks
Do you have an Iphone or Ipad with The latest version of iOS?
A new feature of iOS is "private addresses" in which a new MAC address is issued per private network by default. This feature is affecting previously registered devices on our network.
Apple published that this was done to reduce this privacy risk, iOS devices use a different MAC address for each Wi-Fi network. This unique, static MAC address is your device's private Wi-Fi address for that network only.
To disable the private Wi-Fi address on a macOS device, you can do the following:
Go to the Apple menu and select System Settings
Click Wi-Fi in the sidebar
Click the Details or More Info button next to the network name
Select Off from the menu next to Private Wi-Fi Address
Are you on the correct WiFi network?
Do you have a Muhlenberg College network account? Connect to MuhlenbergWiFi. If you are attempting to connect to Muhlenberg Guest WiFi, please view our Guest WiFi informational page for more information.
Have you rebooted today?
You are probably thinking one of two things - “Seriously, reboot...of course I did!” “Reboot…you mean turn my device off? I don’t do that.” You would be amazed how much good a reboot can do. There are often processes running in the background causing issues. A quick reboot will give your device a fresh start and will allow us to eliminate that step from troubleshooting if the issue persists.
Has your device been off campus for more than 9 months?
If a device has been off the campus network for more than nine months, you will need to re-register to MuhlenbergWiFi when you return. Visit WiFi at Muhlenberg on the OIT website and click on "I have Muhlenberg College network credentials". Note: If you have an Apple mobile device (iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch), you will need to turn off Private Address in your WiFi settings. Visit Apple support to learn how.
Is your device WiFi on?
I know, I know...basic. Check it anyway.
Do you have bandwidth-hungry applications running in the background?
If your Zoom or Google Meet is struggling and you are also doing any (or all) of the things below, you will want to close the apps/browsers to see if your performance improves.
- Streaming Netflix
- Playing games
- Browsing in Chrome and keeping lots of tabs open

What devices are NOT supported?

What devices are NOT allowed?

*Many consumer oriented devices are designed to communicate with one another and require the devices to be on the same network. At Muhlenberg College the WiFi network spans across multiple VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks). That means even if you have two devices on MuhlenbergWiFi they are not necessarily on the same exact network and therefore cannot communicate directly over WiFi. In addition, the security and privacy of consumer oriented products cannot be guaranteed on enterprise networks.
Personal WiFi Routers are NOT allowed on campus
Personal WiFi Routers are NOT allowed on campus, because they cause interference and disruption to those in close proximity. If these devices are found on our network they will be disconnected.
