This week, Muhlenberg College’s new Jewish studies program will present two community lectures.

 Tuesday, October 16, 2012 09:58 AM

On Wednesday, October 17, Associate Professor of History Mark Stein will give a talk, “Traders, Translators and Tax Collectors: Jews and the Economic Life of the Ottoman Empire,” at 7 p.m. at the Jewish Day School, 2313 Pennsylvania Street, Allentown, Pa.  The second lecture, “Supporting Jews Transforming Judaism: Jewish Charitable Organizations in Medieval Spain,” given by Associate Professor of Religion Studies Hartley Lachter, will be held on October 21 at 7 p.m. at the Third Street Bistro, 117 N. Third Street in Easton.

The programs in the series are an extension of the College’s Jewish studies major that will take effect in the fall of 2012. The college has had a Jewish studies minor since 1988. This program is the first new major to be added to the curriculum since film studies and finance in 2006.

This lecture series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Legacy Heritage Jewish Studies Project, directed by the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS). Support for the Legacy Heritage Jewish Studies Project is generously provided by the Legacy Heritage Fund Limited. These events are co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, the Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding, as well as Muhlenberg College departments and local Jewish institutions.
