Muhlenberg to Host 20th Annual Jefferson Field Day

Muhlenberg College will host its 20th annual Jefferson Field Day, Friday, May 6, beginning at 9 a.m.

 Wednesday, May 4, 2011 09:58 AM

540 Jefferson Elementary students will flock to the Muhlenberg campus to participate in relay races, obstacle courses, and team sports managed by 230 Muhlenberg student volunteers.  This day of teamwork, cooperation and friendly competition has been the most widely participated-in community service event at Muhlenberg since its inception 20 years ago.

Field Day is the culmination of yearlong events sponsored by the Muhlenberg-Jefferson Partnership, which pairs college students with Jefferson students in a variety of ways.  Muhlenberg students spend several hours a week providing after-school Homework and Arts & Crafts Clubs, and through the Penpal Program, Muhlenberg and Jefferson students exchange letters over the course of the school year.  In addition, monthly visits to the Muhlenberg campus serve as rewards for good behavior and hard work.

Participants include groups from all over campus, including Plant Pperations, Campus Safety, EMS, ORS, the Copy Center and the Board of Associates.  Many student organizations also contribute, including the Lutheran Student Movement, Theta Nu Xi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Phi Omega, Phi Kappa Tau, the soccer team, the basketball team, Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Chaimonics and the step team.

Editor’s Note: Jefferson Field Day is held on the soccer fields at Muhlenberg College, at the corner of 26th and Liberty Streets.  The rain location is Memorial Hall.  The students will arrive at 9 a.m. and will depart at approximately 1 p.m., after lunch and the awards ceremony.  This event, with 540 elementary student participants and 230 college volunteers, is an excellent community service photo opportunity.  You are invited to cover and photograph this event.
