AICUP Estimates 'Berg's Economic Impact
A recent study released by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Pennsylvania (AICUP) reported that Muhlenberg College contributes $127,383,712 a year to the Pennsylvania economy. As an active AICUP member, Muhlenberg College's presence in the Lehigh Valley has created jobs, partnerships and business opportunities for local residents. In addition, the College will spend more than $30 million in construction projects in calendar years 2009 and 2010.
Independent colleges and universities create 79,213 on-campus jobs in Pennsylvania, with salaries totaling $4.58 billion. In the last few years, more than $500 million was spent on construction jobs for private institutions, helping to create 3,389 construction jobs.
Among the findings for the College were:
- Direct Employment (not including student workers): 719
- Additional statewide employment attributable to institution-related economic activity: 537
- TOTAL statewide employment attributable to institution: 1,256
- Benefit to Pennsylvania state budget from payroll taxes: $915,570
- Benefit to local government budgets from payroll taxes: $318,928
