Princeton’s President to Speak on Co-Education
Dr. Shirley M. Tilghman, president of Princeton University, will deliver her lecture “Promises Made, Promises Kept: Women in Higher Education” on Thursday, February 14, at 7 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall.Monday, February 4, 2008 01:59 PM
Her lecture, the Keynote Address for Muhlenberg College’s 50th Anniversary of Co-Education, is co-sponsored by the Center for Ethics.
Tilghman is Princeton University’s 19th President, serving since 2001. She has been a faculty member since her appointment to Princeton’s Department of Molecular Biology in 1986. As a faculty member, she acted as a founding director for Princeton’s multidisciplinary Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics. Tilghman is an accomplished molecular biologist and teacher who received her Ph.D. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Temple University.
Tilghman is also well known for her pioneering research in mammalian development genetics. She also served as a member of the National Research Council’s committee that set the blueprint for the United States effort in the Human Genome Project.
In addition to her position as president of Princeton, Tilghman serves as a member of the American Philosophical Society, The National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and The Royal Society of London. She also acts as a Trustee of the Jackson Laboratory, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and is a director of Google Inc.
