"This new recognition program is designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their local communities and across the country through volunteer service," according to the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse website.

In addition to recognizing colleges with excellent service learning programs, this year's awards highlight service programs dedicated to rebuilding areas affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005.

Colleges of Distinction
schools were originally chosen partly due to their excellence in fostering engaged students – students who have the opportunity to take an active role in learning, both in and out of the classroom. Service learning is also of primary importance for Beyond the Books, Student Horizons, Inc.'s newest initiative.

This is the first year of the recognition program, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
