Facing East/Facing West: Asia without Boundaries January 16 – March 1, 2008

The Martin Art Gallery at Muhlenberg College proudly presents Facing East/Facing West: Asia without Boundaries, January 16 – March 1, 2008.

Facing East/Facing West is the visual arts facet of Muhlenberg’s 2008 Center for Ethics Forum on globalization.  Guest curators Zoë Charlton, Assistant Professor of Art, American University, Washington, D.C. and Amze Emmons Assistant Professor of Printmaking, Muhlenberg College conducted their search for artists without preconceptions. In so doing, they discovered artists whose works they found to be visually stunning, politically smart, and personally haunting.

The eleven participating artists— Kate Bae, Amy Cheng, Chitra Ganesh, Kazuko Goto, Melissa Ho, Keiko Ishii Eckhardt, Michele Kong, Shin-Yeon Jeon, Soumiya Krishnaswamy, Jiha Moon, Nami Yamamoto— approach their studio practice from vastly different personal narratives.  They use traditional and non-traditional materials while addressing far-reaching issues including: traditional cultures in modernization, the effects of Diaspora on relationships, post-colonial questions of identity and beauty, the echoes of history (and U.S. foreign policy) across generations, and a personal engagement across Asian and Western cultures.

The guest curators and several of the artists will answer informal questions during a reception in the Gallery, Wednesday, January 23, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon – 9:00 p.m.  For information, contact Kathryn Burke in the Martin Art Gallery office, 484.664.3467.  (Several electronic images are available on request.)
