While developing ideas for the exhibition, guest curator Amze Emmons, decided to search for a number of artists whose work could not be easily categorized. He was curious to see what was being made outside the boundaries of traditional media and traditional use.  What he found were eight women— Tova Carlin, Diane Carr, Cece Cole, Leslie Mutchler, Tracey Snelling, Christine Buckton Tillman, Regan Wheat, and Wendy White—who had formally studied art and are now producing it throughout the country in a variety of ways.

All eight artists, while using a plethora of commonly-found materials, have infused their hand-made work with a sense of mystery and unexpectedness. Evident as well are tangible and enjoyable elements of thoughtfulness and playfulness, from Snelling’s intriguing miniature constructs and Cole’s site-specific installations, to Wheat’s pliable, amorphous forms and Carr’s three-dimensional paper forests.

A reception will be held Wednesday, March 21, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the Martin Art Gallery.  The event is open to the public and free of charge.

The Gallery is located in the Baker Center for the Arts.  Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon – 9:00 p.m. The Gallery will close April 5th at 5:00 p.m. for Easter recess and reopen Tuesday, April 10th at noon.  For additional information contact the Martin Art Gallery office, 484.664.3467.
