The event, part of the semester-long series Globalization From Above and Below, is free and open to the public.

Farquhar (University of Chicago) works on traditional medicine, popular culture and everyday life in contemporary China.  She is the author of numerous articles, as well as the book Appetites:  Food and Sex in Post-Socialist China

For her portion of the panel, she’ll talk about Public Health and Personal Pleasure in Millennial BeijingIn Beijing today, the phrase "I Am My Own Best Doctor" is used for the title of many popular books on health.  These books are guides to nutrition and exercise, sleep and dress and are designed to help people take control of their health and avoid illness, doctors, medicines and hospitals.  In this talk, Farquhar will explore some of the historical and social conditions that have led to this widespread self-health movement, and suggest that the movement is driven as much by the expectation of enjoyment as by fear of illness.

Liu (Senior Lecturer on International Health, School of Public Health, Harvard University) studies innovative ways to make health systems in developing countries more equitable and efficient.  Recently, he has been working on health care financing for China's rural poor, a project to study and field test a community-based system for financing and organizing health care in some of China’s poorest rural communities.  The project is supported by the UNICEF, IHPP, and World Bank.

A reception will follow the discussion.  This event is co-sponsored by the College’s series Facing East/Facing West.
