‘Berg Hosts Lecture And Recital On Harlem Renaissance

Muhlenberg College will host a lecture on the Harlem Renaissance and a recital in homage to Paul Robeson, both presented by vocalist Phillip Mentor, on November 1.

The lecture will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Seegers Union 111, and the recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall.  Both events are free and open to the public.
           
Mentor has lectured widely on the Harlem Renaissance.  In this talk, he will discuss the migration of African-Americans from the south to New York City in the 1920s and 1930s and address the literary and artistic endeavors of Eubie Blake, Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Josephine Baker, Kathryn Dunham, as well as the political activities of Marcus Garvey and Adam Clayton Powell.
           
Mentor will play samples of music from this period, explaining the transition of African-American music from spirituals, to jazz, to blues to R&B, to hip-hop.
