'Berg Celebrates MLK with Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr.

More than 300 students, alumni, faculty, administrators, staff and friends honored the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with "A Celebration in Song" on January 18.

Sponsored by the Multicultural Center and led by Director Dr. Ethel Drayton-Craig, the event featured performances by student a cappella groups, InAcchord (Amazing Grace) and Girls Next Door (You Gotta Be); the new Muhlenberg Gospel Choir, led by Rodwin Lowe, Director of Phonathon (People Get Ready, I Go to the Rock); ACCO: A Chorus Celebrating Women (Never Turning Back, Fire Song); and The Union Baptist Church Mass Choir, led by J. Dwayne Evans (Aint''That Good News, Ride On, King Jesus, Total Praise).

Alumna Roberta Meek '06 presented "There's a Message in the Song" and led the audience in singing We Shall Overcome.  Alumnus Richard W. Cohen '53 introduced the evening's closing song with "A History of Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing".

Keynote speaker the Reverend Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., Senior Minister of The Riverside Church in New York City, received a standing ovation for his presentation of "Spiritual Renewal and the Restoration of Justice."   Forbes has been recognized by Ebony as one of America's greatest Black preachers, and by Newsweek as one of the 12 "most effective preachers" in the English-speaking world.
