For the past six years, Muhlenberg College, in conjunction with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has hosted the Governor’s Urban Academy for Teaching Excellence.Thursday, June 21, 2007 01:59 PM
This year, over 200 elementary school teachers and administrators from across the Commonwealth will converge on Muhlenberg’s campus for a full week of intensive professional development to improve teaching and learning for PA’s urban students, highlighting reading and writing.
The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has witnessed the transformation of Roosevelt Elementary School’s literacy program in the Allentown School District and believes teacher involvement with the Urban Academy is directly linked to this academy participation.
“Recently, the school held its final ‘story hour,’ and over 100 families attended, with parents expressing heartfelt thanks for the work of teachers, staff, and administration,” said to Marci Ronald, Acting Director of Community Partners for Community Success for the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. Participating teachers were former participants in the Urban Academy.
On Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at 7 p.m., the 2007 Governor’s Urban Academy will include a presentation by the United Way, Roosevelt Elementary School, and Muhlenberg College on ways the academy has spawned school improvement efforts and results so that others can push and move their school improvement efforts in a similar fashion. The presentation will be held in Seegers Union, room 113.
