In an effort to bring more religious awareness and understanding to campus, Muhlenberg College’s office of religious life is holding a “Religious Life Celebration Week” from November 5 to 11.Monday, October 23, 2006 01:59 PM
The week will include a lecture, a panel discussion, musical performances, a dinner highlighting dishes from non-Western religious cultures and more.
To initiate the spread of religious awareness, the office of religious life will be posting “religious biographies” throughout campus. The biographies will be written by members of the College community who wish to express to their personal experiences with religion, thus demonstrating the unique and individual ways one can be affected by religion.
“Religious Life Celebration Week” will kick off with the “Afro-Semitic Experience” on Sunday, November 2, at 7 p.m. in the Great Room, Seegers Union. The Afro-Semitic Experience is an ensemble dedicated to preserving, promoting and expanding the rich cultural and musical heritage of the Jewish and African Diaspora.
On Monday, November 6, the new Dean of Students, Karen Green, will give a lecture titled “This is My Story,” in which she will speak about her life’s journey as it has led her to Muhlenberg College. The lecture is at 7 p.m. in the Great Room, Seegers Union.
On Tuesday, November 7, the week continues with a Religious Life Celebration Dinner in the Garden Room, the College’s dining hall. The Garden Room serve traditional food from different religions and cultures worldwide. Students are encouraged to dine and learn about other faiths at the same time.
As a way of providing a forum for creative cultural and religious expression, there will be an open mic night on Thursday, November 9 at 7 p.m. in the Seegers Union lobby (by the fireplace). Members of the Muhlenberg community will have the opportunity to perform, mainly displaying performances containing a religious theme.
On Friday, November 10, Chaplain Peter Bredlau will hold a birthday celebration for Martin Luther. The celebration will be held in the Seegers Union lobby and cake will be served.
The conclusion of the Religious Life Celebration Week will feature an Indiana Jones Marathon in the Red Door. Beginning at 7 p.m., all three Indian Jones films will be showed, and there will be trivia questions and prizes for anyone in attendance.
The week will be an innovative way for the College to spread religious understanding and break the ice that often impedes talk of other religions and cultures.
