Gay Advocate and Performance Artist TIM MILLER at Muhlenberg College

On Thursday, January 19, acclaimed gay activist and performance artist Tim Miller will be settling down on Muhlenberg College's campus to wreak some havoc, break some boundaries and shake up common misconceptions about sexuality and gender.

 Tuesday, January 10, 2006 01:59 PM

Miller’s solo performance of “Us” will take place for a public audience in the Baker Theatre of the Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance on the Muhlenberg College campus on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at 8 p.m.

“Us” deals with Miller’s love affair since childhood with Broadway musicals and delves into an exploration of gay marriage, exile and the injustices lesbian and gay people face in America. The program is part of Muhlenberg College's year-long exploration of "The Ethics and Politics of Identity" planned by the Center for Ethics.

A veteran champion of freedom of expression and gay rights (he successfully sued the Federal Government for rescinding his NEA fellowship in 1990), Miller is accustomed to confronting censorship and homophobia. But “Us” charts new and even riskier terrain for Miller, who now finds himself struggling offstage to keep his Australian-born partner in the United States—an impossible feat without the civil blessing of marriage.  Careening from campy renditions of Broadway show tunes to startlingly raw—and undeniably real—appeals for support for the plight of gay and lesbian bi-national couples, “Us” has been heralded as Miller’s most disturbingly personal solo work to date.

Miller is an adjunct faculty member at UCLA and his work is primarily that of instructor, writer, performance artist and GLBT and AIDS activist. His performances have been presented all over North America and Europe in such prestigious venues as Yale Repertory Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. His publications based on his politics and performance art include O Solo Homo, Grove Press,1998 , Shirts & Skin, Alyson Publications,1997 and  Body Blows, Six Performances by Tim Miller, University of Wisconsin Press, 2002. His newest book, 1001 Beds: Performances, Essays and Travels, will be published in March, 2006 for the series,  Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies.

The Center for Ethics offers special events and thematic lectures which foster campus-wide discussion of ethical issues. “The Ethics and Politics of Identity” explores the ways we are defined by our histories, our bodies, who and how we love, where we work, what we write, and what we believe.
