Oplinger retired after teaching 41 years at the College, in courses including zoology, ecology and environmental science. For several decades, he conducted courses in marine ecology and the Bermuda Biological Station. Oplinger has also written other books, including prior versions of a Pocono guide and a guide to the Lehigh Valley.
Oplinger, along with Robert Halma, professor emeritus at Ceder Crest College, wrote the natural history guide book of the Poconos in response to the 20 million people who visit annually. This book is ideal as a reference for amateur naturalists, outdoor enthusiasts, tourists and others looking to explore the area, as it explains the unique geographic characteristics, animal habitats and habits, climate, geology and vegetation of the area. The book highlights observatory points for specific birds, ecosystems, vegetation types and geological features. It also includes the history of the area, tracing it back to its beginnings millions of years ago as part of a shallow sea.
