Muhlenberg College will break ground for its new fitness and wellness facilities and renovations to the existing Life Sports Center, Friday, April 11, 12:30 p.m., with a ceremony in Memorial Hall.
During the ceremony, participants will open time capsules from 1953, when the original field house was built, and 1982, its 30th anniversary. The time capsules will be re-buried, along with a new one.
Ceremony participants will include College Chaplain Peter Bredlau; John Heffer, chair of the Board of Trustees; Jim Steffy, interim president; Dan Klem, professor of biology; Robyn Duda, student body president; Frank Marino, emeritus professor; Rudy Ehrenberg, dean of students; Arthur Altman, trustee and chair of the buildings and grounds committee; Sam Miranda, director of health services; Monica Jones, student-athlete; and Linda Andrews, coach and faculty member.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May, and should be complete in the fall of 2004. The renovated building will include additional locker rooms and office space, new recreation and fitness areas and a new health and counseling center. Significant support for the project has come from Mel Kessler ’59, for whom the basketball coaches’ suite will be named, and the class of 1959; Clair Miller ’59, for whom the football locker rooms will be named; and the football teams of 1970-1980, who will support the naming of the football coaches’ suite.
