The Muhlenberg College office of community service will receive an Allentown Human Relations Commission Award at the annual Allentown Human Relations Commissions dinner, Thursday, October 2, 2003. For information about the dinner, call Lauren Giguere, 610-439-5965. Directed by Valerie Lane, the office of community service was nominated because of its longstanding dedication to linking social action with reflection. The office offers service opportunities that will prepare students for their roles as citizens and leaders while addressing the needs of the surrounding community. Between 2000 and 2003, Muhlenberg College students raised $11,300 for Turning Point, $400 for Habitat for Humanity, and painted a mural at the 6th Street Shelter. This summer, 50 Allentown School District students participated in a free theatre camp. Muhlenberg students volunteer on a weekly basis at Casa Guadalupe, the 6th Street Shelter, Community Bikeworks, Caring Place, and Boys and Girls Club of Allentown, and have performed at various Allentown schools and partnered with Jefferson Elementary in reading, homework, art and crafts, and a field day held at Muhlenberg College. The Allentown Human Relations Commission recognizes the unique efforts of individuals, organizations and businesses, to promote good human relations in the city of Allentown. Other award winners for 2003 include Ashim Bhowmick, Don and Melinda Kohn, Juan Pizarro and Computers for Kids USA. Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg College is a highly selective liberal arts college in Allentown, Pa.
