Muhlenberg College has announced the following faculty awards, which were presented at the College’s 153rd Commencement ceremony on May 18, 2003.
The Paul C. Empie Memorial Award is given in honor of the late Dr. Paul C. Empie ’29, former Chairman of the Board of Directors, to that member of the faculty or staff who relates his or her responsibilities to the widest perspective of humane living, and who as a mentor touches the lives of individual students in ways that lead to the fullest measure of personal growth. The recipient shares Dr. Empie’s own belief that intellectual growth should be balanced by moral sensitivity and that the freedom won through knowledge should be tempered by a sense of ethical responsibility. The recipient of the 2003 Paul C. Empie Memorial Award is Dr. Alan Mittleman, professor of religion and head of the religion department. Dr. Mittleman joined the Muhlenberg faculty in 1988. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Temple University.
The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching is given to a full-time tenured faculty member who shows excellent teaching in the classroom, evidence of commitment to improving his or her teaching ability, and personal concern for student learning. The recipient of the 2003 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching is Karen Dearborn, associate professor of dance and head of the dance program. Dearborn joined the Muhlenberg faculty in 1993. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Radford University and a master of fine arts degree from Connecticut College.
