Joseph Vincent, M.D., will present a lecture titled “A Spectrum of Bioethical Concerns for Physicians” at Muhlenberg College, Wednesday, February 19, 7 p.m., in Lithgow Science Auditorium, Trumbower Hall. This is the first in a series of lectures, “Ethics and the Professions,” sponsored by the Muhlenberg College Center for Ethics.
Vincent will lead an interactive discussion of the ethical issues facing physicians as they fulfill their professional duties. Biomedical ethics is often approached from the perspective of broad issues of general social concern. In this presentation, the focus is on the issues that arise in a doctor’s day-to-day clinical experience. From the patient’s bedside, to the operating room, and in the world beyond the hospital, practicing physicians confront serious issues that require an answer to the question “ought I?”
Vincent practices pulmonary medicine, serving on the staff of the Lehigh Valley Hospital and the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital. An award-winning teacher in the department of medicine, Dr. Vincent is specially trained in bioethics and writes and lectures on this topic.
“Ethics and the Professions” will continue Tuesday, March 18, when Jeffrey Kovac, Ph.D., will present “Professionalism and Ethics in Science” at 7 p.m. in the Hoffman House. On Tuesday, March 25, Brian Martin, Ph.D., will present “Ethics and Whistleblowing,” 7 p.m., in Seegers Union 109-110. The final lecture will be “Ethics and Information Technology,” by Don Gotterbarn, Ph.D., Wednesday, April 2, 7 p.m., in the Hoffman House.
