'Berg Professor Receives Latin Alliance Award

Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish at Muhlenberg College, received the Friend of the Latin Alliance Award at the Latin Alliance Festival, Sunday, September 20, in Allentown. Sutherland initiated El Grupo de Apoyo, a group that provides language and professional resources to professionals who have immigrated to the Lehigh Valley. An advocate for the Latino community, she is involved in an effort to begin a Lehigh Valley Immigrant Workers Rights Coalition to help educate the community about the rights of immigrant workers, and has encouraged Muhlenberg students to participate in community activities in Allentown. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Sutherland earned her master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the Muhlenberg faculty in 1995.
