Award-Winning Director To Discuss Churchill Plays At Muhlenberg
Thursday, October 30, 2003 10:49 AM
Mark Wing-Davey, director of “Henry V” at the 2003 Shakespeare in the Park performances, New York City, and collaborator with Caryl Churchill on “Mad Forest,” will give a public talk and performance, Wednesday, November 5, 7:30 p.m., in the Baker Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Theatre and Dance. Admission is free.
Wing-Davey's talk, “Deer, TV and Chocolate: The Politics of Representation” will focus on the radical subjects and styles of pre-eminent playwright Caryl Churchill. Caryl Churchill has conjured apocalyptic figures such as the shapeshifting death-portending figure the Skriker. Theatre scholar Elin Diamond points out that Churchill's plays use theatrical representation as a metaphor for how “History” is constructed. What are we allowed to see on stage? And what are we allowed to see about the past – our past as told to us by ourselves.
The lecture and performance are sponsored by the Humanities Seminar Speaker's Series and the Center for Ethics.
