SCHIEFFER TO DELIVER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AT MUHLENBERG

CBS broadcast journalist Bob Schieffer will serve as the Commencement speaker for the class of 2002 at Muhlenberg College's 154th Commencement Exercises, Sunday May 19, at 2 p.m. on the College Green. Schieffer will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

Bob Schieffer has been a broadcast journalist with CBS News for over a quarter of a century, and is currently the anchor and moderator for Face the Nation. He joined CBS in 1969 as a general assignment reporter, but has served as the network's chief Washington correspondent since 1991. A former CBS Evening News anchor (Saturday edition), Schieffer has experience covering Capitol Hill, State Department affairs, the Pentagon and the White House.

In 1959, Schieffer received a bachelor's degree in journalism and English from Texas Christian University, and began his career in print journalism as a newspaper reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was the commencement speaker at TCU in 1997 and he recently served as chairman of the Commission on the Future of the University.

Schieffer's achievements have been recognized with numerous awards from professional associations including Sigma Delta Chi (Society of Professional Journalists), the Associated Press Managing Editors and Texas Associated Broadcasters. He has also co-authored a book about the presidency of Ronald Reagan, "The Acting President," and is an Air Force Veteran.

Schieffer is married to the former Patricia Penrose, a civic worker in Washington D.C., and they have two children, Susan and Sharon. His brother, Thomas serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Australia.

The Reverend Heidi Neumark will serve as baccalaureate speaker at 10 a.m.; she will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. Frances Moore Lappé and William J. Small will receive Honorary Doctorate of Humanities degrees; Elliot J. Sussman, MD will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science and Ervin J. Rokke will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Laws.
