Muhlenberg College Hosts Series Of Events On "Patriotism In A Global Era"

The Muhlenberg College Center for Ethics (MCCE) will sponsor The Boundaries of Home: Patriotism in a Global Era, exploring the nature, causes, and effects of the recent resurgence of Americans' love for their country following the events of September 11.

The Muhlenberg College Center for Ethics (MCCE) will sponsor The Boundaries of Home: Patriotism in a Global Era, exploring the nature, causes, and effects of the recent resurgence of Americans' love for their country following the events of September 11. This two-week intensive program will consist of lectures, learning opportunities, and social action events from September 17-26. During this time, there will be an opportune integration of the theme in the classroom, wherein faculty raise and explore matters of American patriotism, allowing students to interact on a more personal level with key issues. Opening Reception and Dedication of "The Bunker Project"
September 17, 2002, 7-9 p.m., Galleria, Baker Center for the Arts
Muhlenberg College Professor Scott Sherk has been commissioned to sculpt his interpretation of this year's theme. This dedication of his sculpture installation will include cocktails and light fare, and a diverse collection of transboundary music and dance. Music professor Ted Conner and his troupe explore African drumming and acoustic jazz; music professor Doug Ovens will play the marimba; and dance professor Jennifer Kayle and her students will dance.

Opening Reception ALBA Photo Exhibition, "The Aura of the Cause"
September 18, 2002, 5-7p.m., Martin Art Gallery
On Display through September 30 in the Muhlenberg Room of the Trexler Library
This 175 black-and-white photographic collection is the largest ever mounted about the North American role in the Spanish Civil War. This exhibit will include photos never before displayed and nine of Robert Capa's famous wartime photos. The opening reception will include a keynote talk by ALBA scholar Peter Carroll.

Forum on the American Flag
September 19, 2002, 7-9p.m., Miller Forum
Panelists including performance artist Holly Hughes, representatives from the ACLU, citizen's organizations, and government will come together for a roundtable forum exploring controversial issues concerning the American flag. Questions of the significance of the flag, use of the flag as a symbol in works or art or consumer goods, and others will be addressed.

"Preaching to the Perverted,", a performance by Holly Hughes
September 20, 2002, 8 p.m., Baker Theatre
Nationally renowned performance artist Holly Hughes will share her struggle by means of her art. Hughes' National Endowment for the Arts funding was taken away from her after confronting of lesbian and gay issues and untraditional use of the American flag. She won and appeal of the decision to suspend her funding, only for it to be overturned. Her performance is inspired by this experience. Interfaith Prayer Service
September 22, 2002, 11 a.m., Miller Forum, Moyer Hall
This interfaith service will highlight the significance of religion as ideology that transcends national identity, to be followed by a light bagel brunch.

Public Viewing and Conversation about the PBS film, "My American Girls"
September 24, 2002, 8-10 p.m., Miller Forum, Moyer Hall
The 2000 PBS film, "My American Girls: A Dominican Story" looks at the joys and struggles of the Ortiz family, immigrants from the Dominican Republic living in Brooklyn. Contemporary issues central to immigrant life, such as American-born daughters struggling between their parents' values and their own, are chronicled. Following the film, filmmaker Aaron Matthews and the Ortiz family will participate in a discussion of acculturation, citizenship, and American values.

Forum on Labor and Economics in the New World Order
September 25, 2002, 7-9 p.m., Miller Forum, Moyer Hall
A debate of issues central to the global marketplace will include panelists from grassroots organizations, labor, government, and the corporate sector. Potential topics include world trade, migrant labor, and foreign aid.

Veterans Reception
September 26, 2002, 5-8 p.m., Miller Forum, Moyer Hall
This informal reception setting, including Muhlenberg faculty, staff, friends, and alumni with service in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Afghanistan, will include discussion concerning the personal perspective the individual soldier contributes to larger transnational conflicts. Col. Normal McDaniel, a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam for six and a half years, will deliver the keynote address.

Spoken Word Performance by John Trudell

Poet, singer, and longtime activist John Trudell will join us. His talents emerged after an immense tragedy changed his life: In 1979, he lost his wife and three children when a fire of suspicious origin destroyed his Nevada home. Since, Trudell has released several books of poetry and CD's, and has appeared in three feature films including "Thunderheart" and "Smoke Signals".
