Robert Wiener, founder and executive director of the California Coalition for Rural Housing Project, will speak at Muhlenberg College, Monday, October 15, 7:30 p.m., in the Miller Forum of Moyer Hall. The lecture, titled "No Place Like Home: Creating Affordable Housing for All," is free and open to the public.
Wiener will be on campus the week of Oct. 15 as part of the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program. The program is designed to bring thoughtful practitioners to the classrooms to engage in discussion with the college population. Schools select fellows such as government officials, business leaders, journalists, environmentalists, and medical ethicists, who best reflect the goals of their respective programs.
The Visiting Fellows program seeks to help equip students for the social, political and economic settings they will enter and illuminate the roles they may play as professionals and informed citizens. The program allows for numerous opportunities for Visiting Fellows to express their views and establish continuing ties with students. During his week on campus, Wiener will participate in classroom presentation, panels, and public platforms, and will speak with students individually.
Robert Wiener earned his Ph.D in Urban Planning from the University of California-Los Angeles. His areas of expertise include housing and social policy, the federal housing program, housing and poverty, residential segregation and discrimination, community development, and nonprofit administration. He has traveled extensively in the third world, meeting with housing professionals, and spent four years in Israel, where he worked, studied, and lectured on housing policy. With Joseph N. Belden he co-edited Housing in Rural America: Building Affordable and Inclusive Communities, published in 1999.
