MUHLENBERG STUDENTS TO PERFORM PLAY "THE LIBRARY" AT HOLOCAUST TRAINING CONFERENCE

Patti Carlis, schools program coordinator for Muhlenberg College's Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding, will direct "The Library" on Thursday, December 6, 8 p.m., at the Adams Mark Hotel, City Line and Monument Avenues, Bala Cynwyd. The performance is free and open to the public.
The play will be performed as party of the Holocaust Training Conference sponsored by the Pennsylvania Holocaust Education Task Force. The theme of the evening is "Using Theatre to Teach the Lessons of the Holocaust."
Inspired by a short play by Inge Karo, a refugee who fled Hitler's Germany in 1939, "The Library" traces the life of Rachel, an 11-year-old Jewish girl growing up in Germany from 1933-1939. The play describes the girl's life at school and at home as she experiences the systematic isolation, loss of rights and privileges, and ultimate dehumanization of the Jews under Nazi domination in Germany. Her only refuge is the library, where she immerses herself in books.
The play, written by Muhlenberg graduate Nora Whittaker, was developed as an educational resource for middle school students, with a corresponding study guide for teachers. "The Library" has been performed at several Lehigh Valley middle schools, followed by discussions with the students.
A brief question and answer period with the actors and Inge Karo will follow the performance.
