Muhlenberg College's Martin Art Gallery will present Albrecht Durer: The Life of the Virgin and Selected Master Prints, November 16, 2001 - January 4, 2002. An opening reception will be held Friday, November 16, 4-6 p.m. in the Baker Center for the Arts.
German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), with unsurpassed technical mastery and expressive power, elevated printmaking in Northern Europe from a profession of artisans into the realm of fine art. His The Life of the Virgin series, part of the College's permanent art collection and governed by the Martin Art Gallery, represents some of his most renowned images.
In his lifetime, Durer saw hundreds of his prints disseminated throughout Europe; those woodcuts, engravings, and etchings reveal his understanding of, and debt to, the work of Italian Renaissance painters Andrea Mantegna, Jacopo Bellini, and Leonardo da Vinci. Durer's work, paintings as well as prints, can be viewed in great museums around the world including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, Le Louvre, Paris and the Prado, Madrid.
Prior to the current venue, the Durer master prints were on view at the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa.
Albrecht Durer: The Life of the Virgin and Selected Master Prints was co-organized by Lori Verderame, Director of the Martin Art Gallery and Leo Mazow, Director of the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery. A didactic brochure accompanies this exhibition.
