Muhlenberg College has established the Institute for Public Opinion. Under the direction of Christopher Borick, the Institute will conduct public opinion research and polling on local, regional and national issues. Polling topics will include political, economic and quality of issues. Borick, an assistant professor of political science, will direct the Institute.
The College recently signed a partnership agreement with the Morning Call. The Morning Call/Muhlenberg College Public Opinion Poll will produce major polls twice each semester, with opportunities for additional smaller polls.
"This is an exciting partnership and a win-win situation for both parties," says Muhlenberg College President Arthur Taylor. "The newspaper gets the credibility of quality, non-biased polling, while our students get terrific first-hand research and polling experience."
The Institute received an initial jumpstart when the Pennsylvania Department of Education awarded a $128,000 grant to Muhlenberg College to aid the institution with technology-influenced, political science initiatives. The majority of the grant will be used for faculty projects, course development and infrastructure improvements within the political science department. There will also be additional funding for course development in the department of Accounting, Business and Economics. The emphasis will be placed on enhancing these majors to include technology-specific skills.
The grant will enable the College to provide practical internships through the Institute, as well as to continue to provide expertise for college and business/government partnerships, including the City of Allentown and its Urban Observatory.
