The adoption of blended and online learning has burgeoned around the world in the last five years. Digital media and technology are nearly ubiquitous throughout our daily lives. In higher education and virtually every other sector, digital technologies are being adopted in ways that transform the environments in which we learn, work, and live. These transformations and their impacts require new and more creative approaches to digital learning. Particularly in the face of political and social crises that challenge higher education and directly impact the lives of our students on campus and in their communities, our commitment to our students’ learning and growth requires that we craft ethical approaches to digital learning.
Student-Centered Digital Learning: Prioritizing Deep Learning Over Tech Trends
Digital learning should be designed with students at its center, not in response to fleeting tech trends. While emerging tools can enhance education, the true measure of value is how well they support students’ deep learning, intellectual curiosity, and equitable access to educational opportunities. Intentionally ethical digital learning prioritizes human connection and ensures that students experience the kind of rigorous and transformative learning that prepares them for meaningful roles in their work and in their communities.
Muhlenberg’s Digital Learning Graduate Program: Human-Centered Design for Meaningful Education
Muhlenberg College’s graduate program in Digital Learning is built on these principles. While we observe digital trends rapidly come and go, the program is grounded in our commitment to student-centered design and practice, intellectual curiosity, and inclusive learning. Our faculty are dedicated to preparing educators and learning professionals with the knowledge and practices that are critical to designing digital experiences that foster human connection. Graduates of our program will be thoughtful leaders ready to shape futures of learning in ways that center human connection and community, rather than tech for tech’s sake. In K-12 schools, higher education, corporate environments, or nonprofit organizations, they will be ready to effect inclusive, dynamic, and meaningful learning experiences for diverse learners.
