Teaching Interests

As a literacy specialist, I focus my teaching on courses intended to promote skills and strategies to guide, support and extend literacy development for teacher candidates in elementary, middle-level and secondary certificate programs. Course topics include reading comprehension, vocabulary development and content-area reading and writing. Authentic texts, including notable children's and young adult literature, are used to present research-based instructional and assessment strategies. My courses also provide opportunities to explore sociocultural contexts for literacy instruction, cultivate critical stances in the perspectives of teaching and learning and develop an evolving philosophy of teaching.

Research, Scholarship or Creative/Artistic Interests

My most fulfilling professional activity is working closely with in-service teachers, whether as a workshop presenter, coach or mentor. Since my arrival at Muhlenberg in 1998, I have worked with many area school districts, including Allentown School District, Bethlehem Area School District, Diocese of Allentown, and York School District. Most recently I have worked with Southern Lehigh School District as an educational consultant, as well as state agencies for programs such as the Governor’s Academy for Urban Education.
