Teaching Interests

As a lecturer in applied voice at Muhlenberg for twenty years, I bring critical thinking from a performer's perspective to my analytical approach to vocal pedagogy.  I've been a clinician for college masterclasses, coached early music at Temple University and chamber music at Swarthmore College, and served as a voice technician for the Delaware Vocal Arts Summer Institute.  I have also taught voice at Haverford College, Lehigh University, and Rowan University.

Research, Scholarship or Creative/Artistic Interests

Hailed for his “rich, authoritative tone” (Washington Post), baritone Brian Chu has established himself onstage as a dynamic interpreter of music from the Baroque to the 21st century. He has soloed with the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, Brandywine Baroque, La Fiocco, Piffaro, Portland Baroque Orchestra, the Dryden Ensemble, and the choir of Trinity Church Wall Street, with repeat appearances in the title role of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, the Bach Passions, Haydn’s Creation, the Brahms, Mozart and Verdi Requiems, and Handel’s Messiah on three continents. Additional credits include Orff’s Carmina Burana, Finzi’s In terra pax, Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. He performed in the acclaimed premiere of Huang Ruo’s staged oratorio Angel Island, in the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

An advocate for contemporary song, Mr. Chu has been cited for “vocal and interpretive confidence” (Philadelphia Inquirer) with the ensemble Network for New Music, performing commissions by Aaron Jay Kernis, Lori Laitman, Daniel Asia, and Steven Stucky. He has appeared in recitals at Carnegie’s Weill and Merkin Halls in New York, Washington's Phillips Collection, and as a US Embassy Cultural Artist in West Africa and Austria.
