Self-Tape Auditions
The Penelopiad
by Margaret Atwood

DUE JUNE 1

We will hold preliminary auditions for the first production of the 2024-25 season via self-tape.

Casting Note: Actors of all genders are welcome to audition for the production and to put themselves forward for any roles that they would feel comfortable embodying on stage.

The audition sign up process has FOUR steps:

If you were already called back after a preliminary audition for Dance Nation, please read below! You should still READ THE SCRIPT and fill out this form. You don't have to submit a video. But you may, if you would like.

SELF-TAPE AUDITIONS DUE BY JUNE 1

Part 1: Monologues

Choose two monologues from this Google Drive folder for different characters.

For preliminary auditions, you will do two monologues from the play from among the monologues provided. Please pick two different characters. The monologues do not need to be memorized, but you should be familiar enough with them that you can act fully.

Part 2: Movement

Create a 30-second video of movement/dance. This can be improvised and you may use music, sound, or silence. Use one of the two monologues marked "Movement" in the Google Drive folder for inspiration.

(You do not need to be a dancer; I just want to see how you incorporate movement in your interpretation of text.)

Video Guidelines:

To submit your audition video, please follow these guidelines:

  • Choose two monologues from the options here and a 30 second movement video.
  • Shoot in landscape mode (i.e. with your phone sideways)
  • Label the video with your first and last name and the date, e.g. MerylStreep_123120. (If you suspect that other people have the same first and last name, please feel free to include a middle initial.)
  • Please slate your name at the beginning and the end of your video and include one fun fact about yourself (e.g. after winning the Oscar in 1980, Meryl accidentally left it in the ladies’ room during the Governor’s Ball).

ZOOM CALLBACKS WILL TAKE PLACE JUNE 12, 13, 17, 18. Conflicts for these dates will be entered in the form.
REHEARSAL DATES: beginning Aug. 16
PERFORMANCE DATES: September 26-29, 2024
Studio Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance

If you were called back already…

If you auditioned for Dance Nation and were called back, you may choose to skip the preliminary audition for The Penelopiad and be considered at callbacks. You should still read the script, and carefully consider whether you are interested in being considered, and for what roles.

Once you have read the script, you should fill out the audition form in order to express your interest and indicate which roles you would like to be considered for.

If you feel you would like to submit a new preliminary audition for best consideration, using monologues and movement prompts particular to The Penelopiad, you may do so.

Of course, if you auditioned for Dance Nation and were not called back, you are welcome to submit a new preliminary audition.

Summer Intensive Rehearsals

Students cast in the production will return to campus around August 16 for a week of intensive rehearsals prior to the start of the semester. The department will cover meals for students involved in the process until meal plans begin at the start of the semester.

Please note that OLs and RAs usually have full-time commitments before the semester begins, so this might conflict with our week of intensive rehearsals for Dance Nation.

More information about dates and the entire rehearsal process will be shared and discussed before callbacks.
