PERFORMANCES
Feb. 8-10, 2025
Please sign up now to audition for this spring's In Motion concert! Details below! In Motion is our annual faculty and guest artist choreographed dance concert. It rehearses throughout the fall semester and into the beginning of the spring term, and performs in early February.
You may be cast in up to two pieces from In Motion. You may be cast in up to four pieces among the three department concerts rehearsing this fall: In Motion, Reset and Studio Sessions.
Each In Motion piece will be scheduled for four hours of rehearsal per week. As you choose which pieces you will audition for, please refer to the rehearsal schedule, below, to confirm that you are available for rehearsals. Reset and Studio Sessions pieces will rehearse up to three hours per week.
Please make decisions carefully, before you accept your casting, about how much of a commitment you are able to make to dance rehearsals this semester!
You may audition for as many dance pieces as you would like.
Reminder: You must be enrolled in a dance technique class in order to audition for a department dance production. The first-year course Dance Practices 1 and adult MCDC courses both count for this requirement.
Guest Artists Kyle Clark & David Dorfman
This year's In Motion concert will feature pieces choreographed by guest artists Kyle Clark and David Dorfman.
Kyle “JustSole” Clark is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He was selected by Rennie Harris for “Puremovement,” and served as its principal dancer and rehearsal director from 2006 to 2014. Kyle has performed and taught internationally in France, the U.K., Amsterdam, Russia, Mexico, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, The Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan. Kyle has won and judged battles nationally and internationally: He judged “House Dance Forever” 2015 and 2016 and won a number of competitions in his own right. In April of 2011, Kyle co-founded “Funky Sole Fundamentals” – a workshop series that brought educators and pioneers from around the world to Philadelphia. Also in 2011, he co-founded Just Sole! Street Dance Theater Company where he serves as Choreographer and Artistic Director. Find out more
David Dorfman, Choreographer and Dance Activist, has been making movement-based dance theater since graduating with an MFA in Dance from Connecticut College in 1981. In 1987 he founded David Dorfman Dance in New York City with the intention of creating politically and socially relevant work. DDD has toured the world from Tajikistan to El Salvador. Closer to home, DDD has regularly performed in New York City at major venues, including The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Joyce Theater, The Kitchen, Danspace Project/St. Mark’s Church, La Mama Theater, NYU Skirball, The Duke on 42nd Street, The Met Breuer, and the 92ndSt. “Y”/Harkness Dance Festival. The company currently tours “(A)Way Out of My Body” which is inspired by out-of-body experiences; and in 2024 premieres TRUCE, a new evening-length work about healing and the possible reincarnation of trust. A life-long educator, David has been a professor at Connecticut College since 2004 where DDD is Company-in-Residence. David choreographed Broadway’s “Indecent,” for which he was given a Lortel for its Off-Broadway run, and has also received a 2019 USA Fellowship in Dance, a Guggenheim, 4 NEA fellowships and a Bessie. Genres are given here to give you a general ideal of the style of each work. The works themselves will evolve through the creative process, and may not reflect a traditional understanding of these genre labels. After the audition, you'll have the opportunity to express a preference for the works that most piqued your interest to you during the audition process.
