Student Teaching
Explore what it means to put your classroom knowledge into practice during your Professional Semester at Muhlenberg.
The Education program at Muhlenberg is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each student. You’ll be advised by program faculty on the cutting edge of educational policy and research who get to know you and facilitate your personal and professional growth.
Experiential opportunities are vital for translating classroom learning into hands-on practice; thus all coursework after the introductory class requires fieldwork in a public school. You’ll be exposed to different grade levels and educational settings, which will clarify your professional goals and grow your capacities in the classroom.
In an effort to prepare our students to work in a diverse society, Muhlenberg partners with local school districts to provide enriching opportunities for work across varied settings and student populations. This dedication is also reflected in our inclusive, equitable and anti-racist curriculum and pedagogy.
Your capstone experience takes the form of a rigorous Professional Semester consisting of two full-time teaching experiences that hone your lesson and unit planning, assessment tools and classroom management skills. Mentor teachers and Muhlenberg supervisors will support you every step of the way.
Some students choose to accelerate their careers with the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) 4+1 program, which enables you to obtain teaching certification grounded in the liberal arts while earning both your bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years (instead of the usual six or seven).
