SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM:
Much of the digestive tract is lined with simple columnar epithelium (E). The cells of this type of epithelium are very elongated. The nuclei also appear to be elongated and are always located at the base of the cell. The finger-like extensions in this image are villi of the ileum, a portion of the small intestine. Each villus is covered with simple columnar epithelium and supported by a small extension of support tissue called lamina propria (LP).
