CARDIAC MUSCLE: Cardiac muscle is a type of striated muscle and the striations are visible in regions of in this longitudinal section (see boxed in area). The intercalated discs (arrows) are also evident, indicating that this is cardiac muscle. Intercalated discs are a collection of intercellular junctions (gap junctions, adherens junctions, etc.) that link two cardiac muscle cells together.
