Muhlenberg’s Physical Science major lets you explore the natural world through diverse perspectives—including physics, chemistry and astronomy—while working through a dual degree program that can open a path toward pursuit of an engineering degree. From the experimental physics of nanomagnets to the theoretical physics of string theory, you’ll study some of the most exciting topics in contemporary science.

The hands of a student with light blue nail polish are seen working on equipment in a physics lab.

This interdisciplinary major is designed specifically as a precursor for students wanting to pursue engineering studies—either in graduate school or as part of Muhlenberg’s unique Engineering Dual Degree partnership with Columbia University, which enables you to earn both a bachelor of science from Muhlenberg and a bachelor of science in engineering from Columbia. Employers tend to look favorably on students who graduate from these programs.

Muhlenberg’s liberal arts setting offers small class sizes and personalized guidance from expert faculty who are dedicated to undergraduate teaching. Experiential learning opportunities let you experiment and apply knowledge in the lab using high-tech equipment. Independent research projects enable you to dive deep into a subject of personal or professional interest with support from a faculty mentor.

You’ll graduate with a broad ranging, sharply honed and highly desirable skill set. Today’s employers value the reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving and communications skills that are central to a liberal arts education. These capacities, combined with outstanding technical preparation, pave the way for a rewarding career.
