Creative Writing Minor: (6 Courses)

The Creative Writing Minor is directed and administered by the Chair of the English Department, and students are advised by full-time creative writing faculty. Students may major in English and minor in Creative Writing and are permitted to double-count specific courses toward fulfillment of the requirements in both programs.

Introductory Courses in Writing: Students must complete at least two courses, each one in a different genre:


  • ENG 203 Nonfiction Writing


  • ENG 207 Dramatic Writing


  • ENG 201 Poetry & Fiction Writing
  • ENG 240, 241 Nature of Narrative


  • ENG 201 Poetry & Fiction Writing
  • ENG 245, 246 Poetry & the Imaginative Process

200-level Special Topics and MILA courses in creative writing can sometimes also count, such as The Art of Creative Writing or Writing Identity Abroad.

Advanced Writing Courses: Students must complete at least two courses from the following list.

  • COM 321 or 322 Writing for the Media
  • ENG 303 Nonfiction Workshop
  • ENG 305 Fiction Workshop
  • ENG 307 Playwriting Workshop
  • ENG 309 Poetry Workshop
  • ENG 364 Screenwriting Workshop
  • ENG 368 'Zines, DIY Publishing, & Literary Journals

300-level Special Topics in writing can sometimes also count, such as Writing in the Community, Writing Children's Literature, Multi-Genre Workshop.

Additional Course: Students must complete one additional course of their choice from Introductory or Advanced writing courses listed above.

Literature: Students must complete at least one 300-level or higher literature course offered in the English or Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Departments.

Living Writers and The Literary Marketplace can also count towards this requirement.
