Frequently asked questions about auditioning for the Dance Program
Should I Audition?
An audition and interview are not required for admission to study in the Department. However, students with strong skills are encouraged to audition. A good audition will improve your chances of being admitted to the College, and an audition and interview are required for applicants who wish to be considered for talent-based scholarship awards.
Prospective students are encouraged to combine their audition and interview with a campus visit and the opportunity to observe or take a class in the department. We typically schedule three Audition Days — two in the fall and two in February.
How do I audition?
Register for one of our Open House and Audition events. We hold two in the fall and one in February. If you are unable to attend an Open House, e-mail department coordinator Tracy Kline, email@example.com, to make other arrangements.
May I send a video audition?
All students are strongly encouraged to audition in person, because we will get to know you and you will get to know Muhlenberg much better in person. However, students who live more than 200 miles from Allentown may submit a videotape audition. Please contact Dance Director Karen Dearborn for details and deadlines.
Is there a dress code? Do I need a costume?
No. You should dress in appropriate dance attire and be prepared to dance your audition and dance in a classroom setting, but you do not need to audition in costume.
Are there talent scholarships offered to incoming students?
Yes. An audition is required for consideration for a Muhlenberg Talent Grant or Baker Scholarship. Scholarships range in size from $1,000 to $4,000 per year depending on talent level. Find out more.
What are the criteria for dance scholarships?
Dance scholarships are based on your current skill and on your potential to develop and to contribute positively to the dance program at Muhlenberg. Learn more about dance auditions.
Should I bring my own music for my solo?
Yes, we have a cassette tape player and a CD player, and can also play tracks from an iPod or mp3 player.
Should I bring a picture and résumé?
Yes. The photo can just be your school photo; it does not need to be fancy or professionally done. It is only used as a means of identification.
Do I need to apply to Muhlenberg College before I audition?
No. However, students applying Early Decision should audition by Dec. 11.
Muhlenberg's application deadline, for both early decision and regular decision, is Feb. 15. Visit the College's Admissions website for details.
