Music at Muhlenberg College
The Muhlenberg College Choir, a mixed chorus, performs Fall and Spring concerts of sacred and secular music. During the first weekend in December, the Choir sings multiple performances of the annual Candlelight Carol Service. In February, 2013, the College Choir will be performing compositions by Faure and Debussy with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.
The Muhlenberg Chamber Singers is a select choral group of outstanding performers chosen from the College Choir. The Chamber Singers perform music in a range of styles and genres ranging from traditional repertoire to settings of popular music.
The Opera Group provides the opportunity for advanced voice students to explore and perform operatic solo and ensemble pieces. This Spring, the Opera Group will collaborate with the Muhlenberg Chamber Orchestra.
The Women’s Ensemble is a female-only select vocal ensemble that performs choral concert of various styles each semester, both on and off-campus. This year, the Ensemble will join the College Choir and Chamber Singers in the Candlelight Carol Service.
Muhlenberg Women’s Ensemble
According to director Ed Bara, Muhlenberg’s newest ensemble had its unofficial beginning in the Spring of 2012 when 18 singers sang 4 pieces as part of the Chamber Singers’ Spring Concert. This small sample was designed to determine if a faculty-directed, women-only vocal group could sustain itself on campus. There was no doubt that the talent was there, but would it find its way to an ensemble like this?

The Muhlenberg Chamber Orchestra performs Fall and Spring concerts including repertoire from the Baroque, Classical, 20th and 21st century. This Spring, the Chamber Orchestra will collaborate with the Muhlenberg Opera Group.
The Muhlenberg Wind Ensemble provides performance opportunities in traditional and contemporary concert music for wind and percussion players.
Musica da Camera performs chamber music for strings and woodwinds each semester in Egner Chapel. The group also plays at selected special events on campus.
The Percussion Ensemble offers students the opportunity to explore composed and improvised music for percussion instruments. The ensemble performs each a concert each semester.
Other ensembles, including a flute quintet and saxophone quartet, are developed in response to student needs and interests.
The Jazz Band performs Fall and Spring concerts in a styles ranging from the Big Band era to arrangements of recent jazz compositions.
Two sections of the Jazz Improvisation Ensemble explore traditional, progressive and experimental forms of jazz. Each group performs a Fall and Spring Concert.
Specializing in music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the Muhlenberg Collegium musicum performs concerts in Egner Chapel in the Spring and the Fall.
Select vocalists and instrumentalists explore early music performance practices and play on period instruments including viola da gambas, bass and tenor recorders, harpsichord, and lute.
