for
SENIOR RECITALS

Senior Recitals must be scheduled by
May 1st for Fall Semester and November 1st for Spring Semester

 

Music Majors – Performance Concentration (Senior Recital)

Music Majors concentrating in Performance will perform a Senior Recital. Spring recitals must be scheduled in the Music Office by 1 November; Fall recitals, by 1 May. Repertoire will be chosen and approves in consultation with the applied music teacher. The student is expected to provide a program, including translations and program notes. The Music Department will offer a Program Notes Workshop late in the Fall semester led by a Music faculty member.

  • Coordinate with Applied Music Instructor: Students will work with their instructor to choose and rehearse appropriate repertoire for the Senior Recital.  Dress rehearsal and Senior Recital dates should be chosen in conjunction with Applied Music Instructor.
  • Choose a Location: The Recital Hall and the Chapel are usual choices for a Senior Recital. Other spaces may be requested, but the Music Department is not able to provide a recording of recitals in any other venue.
    • If a location other than the Recital Hall or Chapel is chosen, Media Services may be able to provide minimal equipment. The Applied Music Instructor will submit an on-line Media Services Request through the departmental forms link and will be responsible for any equipment.
    • If you wish to livestream your Senior Recital, please know that this will be your responsibility to schedule, manage and execute. Our performance spaces do not have standard equipment for livestreaming. If the equipment is in place to livestream, you may schedule a meeting with the Office Manager to review the equipment and to train you on how to operate it. However, there are not any resources available to students to troubleshoot livestreaming issues should they occur. 
  • Find an Accompanist: Students are responsible for paying the accompanist's fee for a Senior Recital. The Music Department does not pay for the accompanist.
  • Make an appointment to meet with the Music Department Office Manager: The Office Manager will review available dress rehearsal/senior recital dates/times/locations and submit reservation requests using 25Live.
  • Format a Program: The music department will have Senior Recital programs printed at the college's print shop at no charge to the student. A Senior Recital Program template is on the Music Department web page under “Forms.” You are not required to use this template. Many students opt to design their own program using an online deisgn and publishing tool. 
    • The program should be e-mailed to the Office Manager ([email protected]) as a pdf document two weeks prior to the Senior Recital date. Students may also opt to print the programs at their own expense. Programs not submitted to the Music Office two weeks prior to the Senior Recital date will not be printed by the Music Department.
    • Once the printed program is delivered to the Music Office, the student will be notified by e-mail. The Music Dept will assign a House Manager to each Senior Recital. The House Manager will arrive at the venue 30 minutes before the start time, distribute programs, and make an audio recording of the recital.
  • Publicity: The Office Manager will add Senior Recital information to the events calendar on the college website, and it will be listed on the department concert/recital list which is printed at the start of the semester. The week of the Senior Recital an e-mail will be sent to the entire Muhlenberg community called “This Week’s Music Events.” If the student provides a brief description of their recital (repertoire to be performed, theme of the recital etc.), the Office Manager will also email all Music faculty and students the week of the event to invite them to attend. All other publicity is the responsibility of the student.
  • Receptions: Students are welcome to arrange a reception following Senior Recitals but are responsible for booking and the expenses incurred. All on-campus catering must be contracted with Sodexo; due to contractual agreement, outside food is not permitted. Music Majors – Music Theory/Composition or Music History Concentration

  • Please follow the same procedures as outlined above. 
    • Please note a Senior Recital does not count as CUE for Music Theory/Composition or Music History concentrations.

 

Music Minors/Other Music Students: Music Department sponsorship is limited to Senior Recitals for Music Majors only

  • Date/Location: The Office Manager will assist in securing the venue for the dates and times of your Senior Recital or Senior Performance and dress rehearsal. 
  • Programs: Should you wish to create a program for your event, you will be responsible for printing programs at your own expense. 
  • Publicity: All publicity is the responsibility of the student. 

 

Music Department sponsorship is limited to Senior Recitals given by Music majors only.
