April 13, 2013 - Dr. Luba Iskold, associate professor of Russian and director of the Language
Learning Center, presented a paper entitled "Facilitating Collaborative Learning in the Cloud" at
the NEALLT 2013 Conference at Cornell University, April 12-14. She discussed the use of VoiceThread and presented examples of collaborative multimedia-based assignments conducted by her students at Berg with students at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
April 11, 2013 - Fatma El-Turky, part-time lecturer of Arabic, was awarded a Teacher Initiative Grant through
the Qatar Foundation. El-Turky earned the maximum grant, which will enhance the
Arabic language program at 'Berg. The grant will help with the purchase of DVDs
and other items about the Arabic culture and language.

April 5, 2013 - Flor Maria Buitrago, lecturer in Spanish, and her student Kerry McGowan '15 were part of the 10th Annual Social Research Social Justice (SRSJ) conference held on April 5th at Muhlenberg College. Prof. Buitrago was the moderator of the panel "Lessons from Literature" where McGowan presented her paper and slideshow called "Characterization of Poverty and Prejudice in La Siesta del Martes", which she translated from Spanish to English for the conference (originally from Buitrago's class Spanish-304 Conversation & Composation). March 8, 2013 - Dr. Joan Marx , professor of Spanish and
department chair, presented the paper, "Memory as Myth in the Latin American Jewish Diaspora: The Poetry of Angelina Muniz-Huberman, Ruth Behar, and Manuela Fingueret" at the 34th Annual MACLAS (Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies) Conference on "From Xocolatl to Xuxa: Latin America in the World " at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania. She also served as the moderator of her panel: "Memory, Ethnicity, and Modernity in Spanish American Poetry.”
March 8, 2013 - Mirna Trauger, lecturer in Spanish, attended the 2013 Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies (MACLAS) conference at Lebanon Valley College. In addition to preparing the program for the conference (in collaboration with Cathy Ouellette) she also chaired a session on Latin American film.
February 22, 2013 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, has given a series of lectures and workshops and has received a proclamation
from Mayor Pawlowski on issues relating to immigration, especially the new program of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Her most recent lecture was an in-service training on DACA for William Allen High School faculty and staff on February 6, 2013, followed that same evening by a community training on deportation at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Allentown. Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski recognized the efforts of Dr. Sutherland's Grupo de Apoyo e Integración Hispanoamericano with a proclamation presented on Friday, February 22, 2013 congratulating the area's DACA recipients. November 16-17, 2012 - Flor Maria Buitrago and Mirna Trauger, lecturers in Spanish, attended the Annual American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) conference in
Philadelphia, PA. where they were invited to participate in a focus group of a new
Spanish conversation program "Relacionate."
November 8-11, 2012 - Dr. Eileen McEwan, associate professor of French, presented a paper
at the American Council for Québec Studies (ACQS) international conference in Sarasota,
Florida. The paper was entitled: "The Politics of French: Speeches made to
Franco-American communities in New England during the 20th century."
November 1-6, 2012 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, held on-campus training sessions for students to use their Spanish skills as Poll Interpreters on Election Day.
Fourteen Muhlenberg Spanish students, under her direction, served as translators at Allentown polling places during this year's presidential election on
November 6th. An excellent
opportunity to put their language skills to
practical use while providing an important civic service.
October 2, 2012 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, gave a talk at Northampton Community College on recent developments in immigration law. With two immigration attorneys, she gave an overview of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and explained the process for requesting relief for young undocumented immigrants.
September 19-22, 2012 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, led a workshop at the XXIII Congreso Internacional de ASELE conference in Girona, Spain. "Planchado pero no blanqueado: Lecciones para el espanol multicultural (Ironed but not bleached: Lessons in Multicultural Spanish)" offered tools for navigating ethnic and racial issues and terminology in the second language classroom.
