Abington Memorial Hospital

AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE ABINGTON
Abington Memorial Hospital offers a program which allows students considering a career in medicine to gain first-hand experience in the health care field. A community teaching hospital, Abington was founded in 1914 and serves residents of Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties. More than 90 resident physicians receive postgraduate medical education at the hospital every year. Abington Memorial Hospital also operates the Dixon School of Nursing, the School of Radiologic Technology and the School of Medical Technology. Our accredited Emergency Trauma Center is the only regional trauma center in Montgomery County designated by the Trauma Systems Foundation.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In order to gain an understanding of the work and responsibilities of a physician in a modern hospital complex, volunteers are required to work a minimum of four hours a week, including at least one weekend during the summer, in the Emergency Trauma Center. Since most program participants have full-time jobs, hours may be scheduled for evenings and weekends. They also attend a weekly seminar with hospital staff members to become familiar with subjects relating to medical careers. Topics include basic and specialty areas of practice, medical school admission, medical ethics and others. An evening or day in a primary care physician's office is also required.

Additional opportunities such as observing in surgery, making rounds with members of the house staff and observing in other hospital departments may be arranged.

REQUIREMENTS


  • Applicants must have completed the sophomore year in college.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a course of study qualifying them for medical school entrance and achieve adequate grades in these
    subjects.
  • Applicants must spend at least six to eight hours a week in the program during the summer (including seminars and volunteer work).
  • Applicants must exhibit a mature attitude toward the responsibilities and privileges of the pre-med volunteer program.

Preference will be given to students living in the immediate hospital area.

Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Gateways to The Laboratory Summer Program

The Gateways to the Laboratory Program is highlighted by the NIH as one of the top ten summer programs for underrepresented and disadvantaged students.  The focus is on freshman and sophomore college students interested in pursuing a MD/PhD.

Reading Hospital and Medical Center

The Reading Hospital is offering a six week internship to work in their Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Obstetrics/Gynecology Departments.

The grant is restricted to those students who are either pre-med students who are completing their junior or senior year of college or medical students who are completing their first year of training.  Positions will be selective. 
Candidates will be chosen on the basis of the following credentials:


  • College transcript
  • Resume
  • Letter of recommendation from premedical/medical advisor or comparable person
  • Personal statement describing level of interest and aptitude in medicine a description of
    benefits that he/she will gain from the program

 What does the six-week program involve? 


  • Exposure to clinical environments in the areas of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine
    and Obstetrics/Gynecology
  • Development of a mentoring relationship with a teaching faculty member
  • Introduction to important concepts involving the doctor/patient relationship
  • A chance to explore physiology and pathophysiology in one area of medicine
  • Participation in a research project that will emphasize research skills
  • Introduction into the basic aspects of clinical epidemiology
  • The opportunity to participate in manuscript preparation, which could result in publication
    (this is likely to occur after the six-week program)

Daily activities will include observation of clinical care, a research project, didactic programs, and assigned readings.  At the end of the
six- week program the student will be expected to create a portfolio and write a paper reflecting on how the experience has impacted him/her on both a personal and professional level.  

The student will receive a stipend of $2500 free meals at the cafeteria and free parking.  Dormitory rooms are available for those living beyond community distance.

The Veterinary Exploration Through Science program is a day program of one week sessions.  Students will participate in rotations with fourth year vet students and experience veterinary medicine throughout their small animal hospital.

Weill Cornell Medical College

Weill Cornell Medical College will conduct a seven-week program for premedical students from diverse backgrounds who have a major interest in working with underserved populations, and will have completed their junior year of college.  The program provides an opportunity  for the student to do an independent study-research project under the supervision of a faculty member, and to become acquainted with clinical and public health aspects of medicine that have particular impact on underserved and minority populations.

* Stipends are designed to support scholars throughout the six weeks at SMDEP. Each program site determines the amount given based on local factors such as cost of living, whether or not meals or travel
are included, etc. Even though amounts vary among program sites, the stipend allowance
given to each scholar is
adequate to support them with their day-to-day living expenses during the six weeks attending
the program.

Stipend amounts and
