Dr. Holmes E. Miller joined the department in 1991. He has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Management Science, all from Northwestern University. His dissertation focused on personnel scheduling and allocation in health systems. He currently teaches courses in the areas of operations management, management science, electronic commerce, information systems, and sustainability. He also teaches courses in Muhlenberg’s Accelerated Degree Program and has taught first year seminars titled: "Quality", "Learning, Working, and Knowing", "Money and Meaning", and "Confronting Disaster", "Why We Work", and is currently teaching "Business and Society" as part of the Business and Public Health cluster.
Prior to coming to Muhlenberg, Dr. Miller spent fifteen years in the business world, working for Chase Manhattan Bank and for the Union Carbide Corporation. He also was on the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to receiving his Ph.D., he worked in the steel industry, the railroad industry, and in management consulting. His current research interests include managing risk in manufacturing and service environments and in supply chains, both in terms of applying analytical methods to arrive at more informed and better decisions, He also is interested in sustainability as practiced in business environments, simulation modeling, and decision making methodologies. He has published over fifty papers in journals, as book chapters, and in conference proceedings.
