FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. What are the regular business hours of the Plant Operations and Residential Services offices?
A.
During the academic year the offices are open Mon. through Fri., 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
During the summer months the offices are open Mon. through Fri., 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Q. How do I identify a maintenance worker?
A.
Each member of the Plant Operations staff should be wearing a Muhlenberg College ID badge. In addition, all non-college contract workers should be wearing a temporary ID badge.

Q. When can a maintenance worker enter my residence room?
A
. Maintenance workers will only enter residence rooms after 9:00 AM unless prior arrangements have been made with the residents or an emergency requires earlier entry. Workers are required to knock loudly at least 3 times before entering a room and must loudly announce their presence upon entering.

Q. Whom do I contact for regular maintenance problems (i.e., light burned out)?
A.
Contact your R.A. or the Residential Services office during regular office hours. They will submit a work order request to Plant Operations.

Q. Whom do I contact for emergency maintenance problems (i.e., major ceiling leak)?
A.
Contact the Plant Operations office during regular business hours. Contact Campus Safety at all other times.

Q. May I remove College furniture from my room?
A.
No, all college furniture must remain in the room in which it was placed.

Q. May I paint my own room?
A.
No, rooms are painted by the College during the summer months based on need and direction from Residential Services and Plant Operations.

Q. Whom do I call if I am locked out of my room?
A.
Contact your R.A. or Residential Services.

Q. What is the normal temperature of residence rooms and classrooms?
A.
The optimum room temperature is between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If your room is not air conditioned and is too hot in summer, the only recourse is to open a window or turn on a fan. If your room is air conditioned and is too hot in winter or is too cold in winter contact your R.A. or Residential Services. Classroom or office problems should be reported to Plant Operations.

Q. May I install an air conditioner in my room?
A.
Air conditioners may only be installed and removed by Plant Operations after approval is received from Residential Services based on certified health need from the Student Health Services.

Q. Where can I keep my bike?
A. Bike racks are available near or in each building.

Q. Whom do I contact if a washer or dryer are not working?
A.
Contact your R.A. or Residential Services.

Q. Whom do I contact if the computers or telephones are not working properly?
A.
Contact the Information and Technology Office help desk.

Q. Whom do I contact if my electric outlets do not work?
A.
Contact Residential Services during regular office hours and Campus Safety at other times.

Q. Whom do I contact if a vending machine does not work?
A.
In residence Halls contact Residential Services. In academic buildings contact the Purchasing Office.

Q. Is there any storage areas provided by the College?
A.
No, but Residential services can recommend a commercial storage facility.

Q. Whom do I contact if my car will not start?
A.
Contact AAA or another road service agency (personal membership required).

Q. Whom do I contact if I lock my keys in my car?
A.
Contact AAA or another road service agency (personal membership required).

Q. Whom do I contact if my car has a flat tire?
A.
Contact AAA or another road service agency (personal membership required).

Q. In the event of a snow storm whom can I contact to borrow a shovel to dig out my car?
A.
Both Campus Safety and Plant Operations will loan you a shovel upon leaving your ID card as a security deposit.

Q. Whom do I call about recycling?
A.
Contact either Residential Services or Plant Operations during regular office hours.

Q. If I live in an apartment or M.I.L.E. House, when and how do I dispose of my trash and recycling?
A
. All trash and recycling must be placed at the street curb in front of the house after 6:00 PM on the day of the City of Allentown collection. In the area around the College the trash is picked up on Monday and Thursday nights. Recycling is collected on Thursday nights. All trash and recycling containers must be removed from the curb site by 9:00 AM the morning after collection.
