Peer Tutor Position Description

Program Philosophy:

Although Muhlenberg’s Academic Resource Center employs professional Learning Specialists, the hallmark of our program is peer support. We believe that peer tutors’ developmental proximity, accessibility, strategic learning knowledge, and training make them a powerful academic resource.


  • Nomination by instructor of course for which tutoring will be done
  • Overall GPA of 3.00
  • Demonstrated mastery of pertinent subject areas
  • Demonstrated overall academic ability
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work well with faculty
  • Ability to work well with peers
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students seeking assistance
  • Ability to reinforce study skills pertinent to subject matter


  • Attend new tutor training orientation as required by Muhlenberg’s certifying organization, The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)
  • Attend additional training sessions to develop better tutoring skills as well as becoming CRLA certified
  • Maintain reports of all tutoring activities; tutor training, meeting with professor, and tutoring sessions
  • Be available to discuss students’ work with Tutorial Coordinator upon request
  • Be available for at least two hours per week for tutoring throughout the semester
  • Prepare for each tutoring session for optimum results
  • Meet with professors of each tutee assigned
  • Turn in paperwork monthly on designated due dates
  • Meet with Tutorial Coordinator to discuss problems or concerns
