Muhlenberg is located in a tree-lined neighborhood in Allentown, which is the third largest city in the state of Pennsylvania, with a population of approximately 118,000 people (as of 2010). Allentown, along with the cities of Bethlehem and Easton, comprise the core of the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Allentown is within convenient driving distance of several other metropolitan areas, within one hour from Philadelphia, less than two hours from New York City and about three hours from Washington, DC. The Lehigh Valley is home to 107,000 Latinos (any race), 41,000 blacks (including some Caribbean blacks and recent African immigrants), over 20,000 Asians/Pacific Islanders, and 2000 American Indians/Alaska natives (source: 2010 census). Allentown itself is even more ethnically diverse, with non-Hispanic Caucasians representing just 16% of the students in the Allentown School District. Students originate from 43 countries and speak 26 languages; 12% receive ESOL services.

The College is a member of the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC), which is comprised of six colleges and universities located within the Lehigh Valley region. Allentown is also home to Cedar Crest College and Lehigh Carbon Community College.

There are many opportunities for fun and recreation in Allentown and the surrounding areas. With over 2000 acres set aside for public parks, Allentown has the greatest percentage of park land for a city its size of any city in the country. One of these parks, Cedar Beach, is conveniently located just adjacent to the College. Allentown is also close to the Pocono Mountains, which offers excellent hiking, recreation and regional tourist attractions.

Within a brief drive from Allentown are several theaters, museums, and other artistic and cultural opportunities. The Allentown Art Museum, Symphony Hall, Arts Quest, Banana Factory and Easton's State Theatre provide opportunities for engagement with the arts for people of all ages. The Muhlenberg College community also contributes to Allentown’s West End Theater District, which features an independent film house and community theater.

Allentown also features Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, a popular amusement park. Allentown is also home to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Triple A minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Allentown is also the future home of the Adirondack Phantoms, the AHL minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Allentown provides a wide range of dining options, from small pubs to ethnic restaurants and upscale eateries of all types. Downtown Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton feature a wide variety of small, independent stores & boutiques, as well as larger shopping malls such as the Lehigh Valley Mall in nearby Whitehall. The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley feature high-end shopping and dining in an outdoor “Lifestyle Experience.” The Sands Bethlehem Casino & Resort offers boutique shopping, as well as dining, entertainment, and other activities.

Every week, the Allentown Fairgrounds Farmer’s Market provides a unique shopping experience for those seeking local produce, meats, baked goods, and other treats. Once a year, the Farmer’s Market area is replaced by the annual Great Allentown Fair. The Fair takes place in late August and offers attendees music, rides, shopping and traditional fair concessions. In early August, the region is home to the annual Musikfest, which is billed as the nation’s largest 10 day non-gated music festival, featuring over 300 acts from a wide variety of genres and regions across the globe.
